Purchase: I had to buy a saddle very fast while in New Mexico working with a Appaloosa/Cross I had bought so I could finish a training course with him. None of the ranch saddles were large enough for him. I am 5'4" and the horse is 16 3/4 hands high. I paid over $1,200 for the saddle.
Likes: The Saddle is very well made, beautiful to look at and fits the horse exceptionally well. It also fits me and is pretty comfortable.
Dislikes: It is too heavy for me to throw on my horse alone. I was told it was about 25 lbs but since then have found out it is heavier. Are there any aids to help one throw on a heavy saddle? I am 60 and have a torn rotator cuff...which can not be fixed. The saddle also doesn't have a padded seat so isn't quite as comfortable as it could be. There were only 3 draft sized saddles in ABQ, NM.
Quality: This saddle very well made and will last years though I doubt I will be able to use it.
Summary: I know I am not the only one facing major difficulties with a too heavy saddle and a tall horse. I drove from AR to AZ to look at the horse I bought, having been told he was 15.5 hands. I would not have looked at him knowing he was 16 3/4 hands but he is a gem. Surely someone has come up with a device or aid to get these heavy saddles on when you really can not justify buying another new saddle. I love the western style of saddle...it is all I have ever used. With the right device so many people wouldn't have to turn away from the quality saddles to the new light weight man made saddles that are not handsome.
