Purchase: Did a trial of a Black Country with Trumbull Mountain (Summit Model). Saw such an improvement in my horse and loved the comfort I had to order one. Had it customized for me and the horse at no extra cost. Even though it would arrive in about 4 weeks, I started searching for a used one to get me by until then. I had been trying demo after demo for almost two years and even had a County saddle fitter out to fit the horse with no luck. Nancy from Trumbull Mountain sent me two demos and the Summit fit him wonderfully and me as well. So I am still waiting its arrival but I bought this XW Galway on Ebay for $1200.
Likes: The saddle had a good amount of miles on it, but the leather was to die for. It has the wool serge panels that were in excellent condition. These saddles are so amazingly comfortable, perfectly balance, secure feeling, and most importantly made the horse happy. My horse has been putting up with "Hey try this on" for some time and started to become quite agitated when saddled. Typical behavior of a saddle that does not fit which can continue even when you find a saddle that does fit well. By the second time I used the saddle his behavior started to improve and within a week no longer showed signs of being girthy or agitated when saddled. Also his extended gaits improved within two rides. Now keep in mind this saddle is not a perfect fit for him but pretty darn good. Looking forward to the new saddle and hope I love it as much as I love this one.
Dislikes: There is nothing that I do not like. I can not stress that if you have never tried a Black Country to email Trumbull Mountain, follow their instructions on the website and email the info. They respond quickly and only charge your card for the shipping of the saddles unless you do not return them! There expertise is amazing. They sell other saddles for different budgets, but these saddles are customized for well under 3K.
Quality: The construction and quality is better than County and cost less. Love the calfskin leather. Enough said.
Summary: If you can not afford one new, search for a used one. I paid 1200 and have seen new or slightly used for 1600. You will save in the long run. I have never sat on a saddle that was more comfortable than my couch, until I sat in a Black Country.
