Category: Show Saddles
Purchase: (I was not sure which category to put this under. I will be using this saddle for the local shows I compete in, so I put it in the show saddle category but it is really a cutting/working cow horse style of saddle.) I got this brand new saddle July 2009 in trade for 2 used saddles owned by my trainer, 2 original oil paintings done by me (a stagecoach and Colorado Winter scene, both with frames) and some cash. The original cost was $1600.
Likes: My problem is my legs and feet. They are always too far back and when I use my spurs, the poor horse gets it in the flank. I know I am driving my trainer nuts because he is always on me about this. But as soon as I sat in this saddle and put my feet in the stirrups, my trainer remarked " You already look 100% better. Your feet are right where they belong." This saddle is just what I needed to help improve my riding. The tree is similar to a cutting horse saddle, but with a narrower twist. It sets my bottom deep in the saddle where it belongs. The seat is originally a 16" but with the comfortable padding measures 15 1/2". Even so it feels roomy enough for my ample rear end. The saddle has square skirts with floral tooling and some silver conchos to make it pretty enough to show on the local level, which is what I will be doing with it.
Dislikes: Nothing. It is absolutely perfect! Well, perhaps the cutting type horn could be shorter.
Quality: This excellent, well-built, quality saddle and its tree were both are made in Sulphur OK and sold by Sulphur River Saddlery. It has real wool lining and a new style of quick change buckles that are more streamlined for the stirrup leathers.
Summary: I can only sum up with how happy and satisfied I am with this saddle. Any business transaction can be influenced by not only the quality and price of the item but by customer service. If someone wants to buy a great saddle for an affordable price, go see Jody at Sulphur River Saddles in Talco TX. He is honest, treats the customer with respect and courtesy and makes sure you are pleased with your purchase.
