Tad Coffin
Jumping Saddles

For Sale on eBay

Manufacturer: Tad Coffin
Model: A5
Category: Jumping Saddles

Purchase: I tried this saddle from another girl at my barn, because we are roughly the same size and we both have long legs. I needed a new saddle because my old '93 Butet needed to be replaced. Even though the Tad Coffin was a 2001 saddle, I figured the brand was reputable enough to trust, not to mention the wear and tear was minimal. The owner was going to sell the saddle for $500 to get it off her hands (note: I didn't actually buy the saddle, read on to find out why!).

Likes: After being ridden in for years, it still looks great. The leather was high quality and the billets were still in good condition. I could move my leg freely, but I still felt secure -- what I wanted to change from my old Butet was the feeling of water-skiing, where my legs were in front of the vertical.

Dislikes: The saddle isn't too customizable (not that I took that route, but if I were going to, it's not available). The seat is flat as a pancake, which I personally don't like, and VERY hard, I felt like I was sitting on a slab of wood. That was definitely the deal breaker, because I want a comfortable saddle and something that doesn't distract me while I'm riding. The tree width is also an issue, because TC's only come in a wide style.

Quality: The seat, as I said, is flat-flat-flat. It doesn't make you slosh around the seat, but I personally don't like the flatness of it. The quality of the leather was great, though, especially for its age, and the color was still even, too.

Summary: I decided not to take this saddle, since it was just plain uncomfortable and the tree was a bit wide for my 16.2 Holsteiner. It fit me well and I was secure, but my comfort and my horse's comfort come first.
