RCS Aristocrat Zip Field Boots
English Chaps/Boots/Helmets

Manufacturer: Dublin
Model: RCS Aristocrat Zip Field Boots
Category: English Chaps/Boots/Helmets

Purchase: I was looking for a good quality 'middle of the road' priced field boot for daily riding and was interested in the zip-up models. After trying out a few pair, I chose the Dublin Aristocrat Zip Field Boot for about $165.00 from one of my favorite tack shops here in Central Texas. I wanted the zip up model for the ease of on and off it provided, and wanted something nice enough for dressage lessons.

Likes: I liked the suppleness of the leather, the fine stitching and hidden zipper, and the way the sole held up to daily wear and tear. I am also an endurance rider and wanted a quality leather type boot that would withstand the occasional moment endurance riders sometimes have to 'blaze their own trail' and the smooth grain offered an easy way to buff out any scratches that might incur on a weekend 25 mile ride through the national forest here.

Dislikes: I was pleased with the quality of the boots at first, but then became disappointed later when the zipper would give away and the calf would bust open during a ride. I cleaned my boots regularly with Leather CPR and would take a small amount of paraffin wax and coat the zipper to keep it functional and to discourage any wear and tear from sand, soil, dirt, etc. The boots lasted about 7 months before the zipper blow outs. The boots themselves are in great shape, but the zipper (when fully zipped) will still blow out in the middle of the calf and then it becomes a hassle to even get the boot off at that point due to the separated zipper. I have taken the boots to professional boot repair shops and received estimates on having the zippers replaced, and both were too expensive considering the original cost of the boots themselves.

Quality: The Dublin field boots are finely sewn, and have a professional quality and characteristics often seen with the higher priced models such as Ariats. I have owned many pair of Ariats, and they have lasted for many years, but you will also pay a decent price for this privilege. Dublin's boots look nice and are of decent enough quality to show in, and are sturdy enough to hold up to everyday riding abuse but this particular model's zipper seems to give out long before the boot itself, rendering a perfectly good boot useless unless repaired. Unfortunately it seems that zipper repair (including shipping fees) can cost more than a new pair of boots.

Summary: I don't think I will purchase a Dublin brand of zip up boots again (either tall or paddock variety) until more work is done to develop a zipper that will last as long as the boot itself. I have owned other zip up varieties and brands and have not had this problem. Like I mentioned before, the boot itself has the potential to live up to even the larger brand name qualities of tall boots out there, but the zipper version of the boot really puts this particular model in last place as far as bang for your buck. These boots barely made it half a year before failing.
