Purchase: I got a fantastic deal on this saddle. I purchased it brand new on sale for $1300. It came with Bates stirrup leathers, the complete gullet kit and a pretty purple Bates cover. I chose this saddle after going through a Courbette and a Stubben trying to find something to fit my narrow, high withered Thoroughbred.
Likes: I like just about everything about this saddle. The cair panels actually seem to help my sensitive horse, and it is very comfortable to ride in. I love the fact that if I get a new horse, I don't have to purchase a new saddle. The gullet system is difficult to change the first time, but easy once you figure it out. The leather is beautiful, and has been darkening nicely with mink oil. The adjustable flexiblocks are great, once you figure out where to put them to your best advantage. In my other saddles, I constantly felt like I was fighting with my tack to stay in the correct position. With this saddle, my trainer noticed a big improvement in my position.
Dislikes: I wish Bates would make bridles and breastcollars to match their saddles. I got my saddle in dark brown which is not hard to match to products from other companies. (It matches my Courbette bridle and breastcollar nicely.)
Quality: Excellent! Very high quality. I expect this saddle to last a lifetime.
Summary: Great product, the importance of having a correctly fitting saddle can not be overstated. Your horse will thank you for buying this saddle.
