Classic Equine
Top Load Hay Bag
Barn and Stable Misc

Manufacturer: Classic Equine
Model: Top Load Hay Bag
Category: Barn and Stable Misc

Purchase: I purchased one of these feed bags for $22 from Jeffers Equine. I already had one of these bags, but my big guy is tough on them and they fall apart quickly on him so had to get a new one.

Likes: These bags are convenient and help my chow hound eat slower and savor his food. They come in cool colors/designs and have a design that eliminates dust.

Dislikes: These bags unfortunately fall apart quick (only with my big guy). I've had the same one for my other horse, an Arabian, he is easy on his things and it has lasted the whole year, still looks new. For horses that are hard on their things like my big guy, these bags only last for 4 months. Then I have to buy another one. I only keep using them because they work well and are safe.

Quality: These bags have 8 small grid squares in the middle and a flap closure that goes over and velcros shut to prevent the horse from tipping the bag over and getting the food "the easy way". It actually forces them to slow down and eat like they were naturally intended to and makes their hay last a little longer. It is a cordura material with adjustable nylon straps with snaps at the end to hang on rails/panels. It has screen material at the bottom to "sift" the hay every time the horse eats from it and prevent dust inhalation/eating. These bags come in solid or design colors/patterns. I personally love the pattern colors. If you have a horse who's tough on their stuff, this bag won't last you a long time and you'll have to buy several a year (unless you can repair them yourself). The straps come loose at the seam of the bag and the bar that gives it structure at the top pokes through and starts coming out.

Summary: I really like these bags. My horses used to injure themselves on barrel feeders and haven't since I switched over to this hay bag. For one horse, I don't replace it at all, and for the other, I have to replace it every several months...but I've been saving the ruined bags to repair and re-use and keep as spares. You just need some heavy duty tent thread and it's good to go.
