Purchase: I purchased this item online from Adams Horse Supply for $42.25.
My horse cut the front of his right hock not once but twice within a 5 week period. After the second, much deeper injury, I needed to keep a bandage on him. The hock is a HORRIBLE area to try and keep covered. Bandages either stretch and gap or just slip down. I looked at the standard neoprene hock wraps and quickly realized it would:
1) too tight, and
2) too hot as we were experiencing triple digit weather for weeks on end.
I needed something that was soft, adjustable and breathable so I went out on the Net and found Boomers Hock Sock and all my hopes and wishes were answered!
Likes: What a FANTASTIC product! I simply cannot say enough about how wonderful Boomers Hock Sock is and how no stable should be without a set on hand. Even my vet was impressed and will be using them in the future.
I used the horse size on a 16.2h Thoroughbred with average bone. The Sock fit him well. I didn’t adjust it quite right initially and on his first roll in the pasture the Sock did slip. After that I made sure the point of his hock was well seated in the Sock and secured the straps a bit tighter. I worried that there didn’t seem to be a lot of give where the edge of the Sock comes across the top of the hock but my horse never acted like his movement was restricted and did not sustain any rubs or hair loss. He wore the Sock for two weeks 24/7 – in and out of the stall. I was able to treat the wound with a medicated gauze pad and a light wrapping of brown "Cling" gauze. The Sock held everything in place and kept it clean. I did wash the Sock once during the two weeks – it was in and out of the wash/dryer and like new in no time.
I also purchased the a set of Boomers Leg Wraps and while I haven't used them yet they look just as wonderful as the Hock Sock.
Dislikes: Honestly...there is nothing I don't like about this product.
Quality: Nicely padded - much like shipping quilts. Plenty of clingy Velcro. Solid stitching. Washed up beautifully. Well designed.
Summary: Not much more to say except that if you're in the market for a hock wrap to protect your equine friend from sores or an injury (I would also think you could use this for shipping) this is the product to buy. Comes in Pony, Horse or Warmblood sizes.
