Purchase: Purchased from State Line Tack late in 2005 for about $40.
Likes: Initially I liked the Dial-Fit's ease of use. The helmet was cooler to wear than I expected. The surface did not show much wear even after 3 years of abuse. Harness easy to fit. Inexpensive, good color choices. All the internal padding can be removed and washed which kept any odors down.
The brim is thick so if you drop it it won't break/chip like the Troxels or the Tipperarys.
I used a Troxel Show Cover on it to show twice and though it looked just like a schooling helmet with a velvet cover on it, it was okay for small schooling shows.
If the helmet is damaged in a fall you can send the helmet and the sales receipt to Aegis and for $20 they will send a replacement. I have not done this.
Dislikes: The Dial Fit mechanism broke sometime in 2008. It is still serviceable to change the fit, but you have to pull it strongly apart to make it bigger and the dial just spins and does nothing. The harness strap is REALLY long and I had to wad it up and stitch it so it wasn't hanging to my chest. The colored plastic shell began to separate from the black plastic bottom.
Quality: I had one very minor fall in 2006 and felt the helmet gently hit the ground. Not sure if my "dislikes" are because of that or just general quality. I suspect these issues would affect the actual safety of the helmet, but I'm not sure.
Summary: I think it's a fine schooling/starter helmet for the price, just don't be surprised when the Dial Fit stops working. I really liked the helmet when it was working properly.
