Purchase: Two winters ago, I finally decided to stop trying to bang ice out of frozen water buckets. I did a little research and decided to buy a tank de-icer (as opposed to a tank heater), since I did not want the extra cost that went with heating an entire water trough. I didn't think my horse would play with the de-icer so I picked up this one from our local Tractor Supply Company for about $29.99.
Likes: I like that the Manufacturer offers a 3 year warranty and the product is UL listed. It's sturdy and is thermostatically controlled so it is not "on" when it doesn't need to be.
Dislikes: Seemed to stop working when we plugged it in this past spring. I am not sure if it was due to the way we stored it or if something happened to it over the long summer (things always manage to get moved around in the barn anyway.) It was working fine when we put it away. I did bring it back into Tractor Supply and they exchanged it without issue.
Quality: "New" unit has held up well the last couple months, the old one also had no visible damage. This year we will put it back in the box to store it come spring! The thick cord is also wound with wire to discourage chewing. 3 Prong plug is a plus.
Summary: I would not hesitate to buy this again. It worked great for 2 years, and I honestly am not sure the product was "at fault" this past year. If it happens again, maybe, but so far so good! I like that the company stands behind their product and that their products pass UL standards. It is really convenient not having to chop ice out of buckets or troughs, and I feel much better knowing the horses have access to water 24/7.
