Amerigo
CC Pinerolo Monoflap
Close Contact Saddles

Manufacturer: Amerigo
Model: CC Pinerolo Monoflap
Category: Close Contact Saddles

Purchase: Purchased off Ebay for $1800 in July 1009. These saddles retail for about $3500-4000, depending on customization. What can I say - I'm an Ebay queen. I didn't really need a jumping saddle, but this was too good of a bargain to pass up.

Likes: The entire saddle is eye-candy. The leather is like a gorgeous Italian leather purse, and it wears well, too. There is darkening along where the leathers lie, but this is a caramel colored saddle so that is to be expected. I also use calfskin covered Bates leathers to minimize scratching. The balance is wonderful over fences, even over some less-than-perfect jumps. I can easily gallop around a xc course all day. I have issues with my knees and hips, due to an old injury, and the saddle is balanced so perfectly that my soundness issues don't affect me at all. The fit is a little stranger than some other saddles. After a little research (since I bought it used and didn't have a fitter to aid me), Amerigos supposedly sit a little further back than you think they would on the horse. I slid my saddle back a little further than I thought it should be, and it fits him extremely well in this position. Where it was before, it was a tad too narrow. I use a Thinline Trifecta pad underneath it and my gelding is quite comfortable in it.

Dislikes: Due to its forward center of balance, it makes things just a little bit harder to sit down and back in front of a trappy jump. Not terribly difficult, just not as easy as my Black Country Quantum. Even though it's a monoflap, I prefer this saddle for stadium and less for XC for that reason. However, before I found my BC, I was perfectly happy in this saddle. If I had to buy it new, I'm not sure I would due to the price. They're VERY expensive, but at that price, there are so many customization options. They definitely rank up there with Devoucoux, Antares, and Prestige. In fact, for the fit of the horse, I'd buy this before I'd buy a Devoucoux anyday.

Quality: MOnoflap, so very close-contact. It's a 17" seat, standard flap, Medium tree on the side of Wide. Amerigo's brands define what type of horse it fits - this one is the CC, which supposedly fits "high-blood" (Thoroughbred types) with high shoulders and withers. My Trakehner is very Thoroughbred-like, but he has an average shoulder and wither and this fits him fine. It is also in the Pinerolo leather, which is the sticky calfskin. The seat sizing appears to be true to size - I normally take anywhere between a 17"-17.5" seat, depending on how forward the flap is, and this fits me fine. I'm 5'5, 31" inseam, 18+" from hip to knee. Saddle gullet is nice and wide, billets are very sturdy and have that nice "finished" look, and panels are wool so can be adjusted to fit. The tree can also be adjusted one width one way or another.

Summary: Gorgeous saddle, but pricey. If I really liked it but had to buy it new, I'd probably go with their less-expensive version, the Vega, which is more off-the-shelf. If you can find one used for less than $3k, I'd snap it up (providing it fits your horse). Amerigo's website is wonderful in describing which model fits a certain type of horse.
