Model: Turnout Winter Blanket 3/4 Neck
Purchase: Needed a new winter turnout for my older 16 hh TB & thought I'd try one of these blankets as they are really well featured and at a reasonable price. Plus, they looked really nice in the website ad. I got the solid colour though ;>) Purchased thru mail at Pleasant Ridge Saddlery in Ontario for $99.95 + tax in fall of 2009.
Likes: I like the ton of features this blanket offered, 1200 D ripstop, Dupont Waterproof, Breathable, shoulder gusset, higher neck than standard, taped seams, low crossed surcingles, tail flap and elastic leg straps. And it said in the ad it had a special 350 gram poly fill that was tighter weave for less bulk. Bonus for my horse. All the great features seen in the more expensive blankets. When it arrived I was indeed surprised as it was much lighter (thinner) and in a smaller plastic protective case than I expected. The ripstop material has held up so far, but to be honest my horse is not hard on blankets. The front double buckle and snap system works well on him. Great front fit for him so I am pleased with that.
Dislikes: Well, I guess the fit. My horse is pretty run of the mill easy to fit TB, he's fully filled out, mature, level topline etc. The front fit perfectly but from the middle to the back end I'm not 100% pleased on the fit. It could have a longer drop in the middle. His belly shows at the bottom of the blanket in the middle. But the biggest concern is the the very back end won't stay in place on him - it keeps shifting to one side, quit a bit. I have to keep adjusting it. It shifts as soon as he walks off. He is an 80" and it fits length wise perfectly so I don't think the size is the problem. The darts on the butt are not "even" and there is a huge flap of cloth on top because of this. Hmmm. I have tightened the belly straps but am hesitant to add the tail tie, I'm afraid he might get it caught some how somewhere. Maybe later in the winter as the blanket settles more it will stay put better. For the record I have another horse wearing a Weatherbeeta and it hardly moves (shifts) in the backend, they roll in the snow about the same amount.
Quality: The 1200 D ripstop material is fine, all the stitching seems good. I don't really care for the quality of the hardware, wish it was stainless steel.
Summary: I guess you get what you pay for. It's not a bad blanket and certainly has a ton of great features, just is a $99.95 blanket. I hope to get a couple or a few, - winters out of it. I didn't need a really thick heavy weight blanket as this horse is not clipped for the winter and has grown some coat so the fill weight is perfect. It probably is a good match for my needs just wish the fit at the backend was a bit better and came down a bit longer in the sides. Would I buy again? Not sure... guess if my horse had a huge butt, high back end , then NO. But if I had a horse I needed a quick cheap blanket well, I would consider one.
