Purchase: I purchased this saddle about 5 years ago from Colin at the Australian Stock Saddle Company. I decided to upgrade from a Patrol Poley which had also been purchased from Colin. I met Colin at the Equine Affaire in Springfield, MA and he came out to my trailer, measured my horse and took my trade-in. I received the Southern Cross Saddle about 1 month later. The saddle cost $2300 at that time. I noticed that it is currently listed for $3500.
Likes: I like the appearance, comfort and security of this saddle. It is a very well made and balanced saddle which fits both of my horses (Lippittt Morgan and Quarter Pony). I am currently in the market for a new horse and it has fit another 2 Morgans and a Curly Horse which I have looked at. Colin had my saddle made without the sweat flaps to help make the saddle lighter and easier for me to lift. My saddle weights about 20 lb without fittings. I also like all the D-rings on the saddle so I can attach/carry all my stuff: breastplate, crupper, saddle bags, sponges, water bottles, easy boots, no problem!
Dislikes: I didn't like the fenders or the stirrups which came with the saddle. I switched to standard leathers and caged endurance stirrups (which also makes the saddle easier to lift).
Quality: The leather and workmanship are excellent. My horse once decided to lay down while he was saddled and start to roll. The only damage to the saddle were a couple of scrapes and one of the poleys bent backwards. I called Colin on a Sunday afternoon expecting to have to ship the saddle back to him in California. He told me that was not necessary and described to me over the phone how to fix my saddle.
Summary: I LOVE my Southern Cross Australian saddle! I have many friends who have also purchased this saddle and feel the same.
