McAlister
600D Mediumweight Turnout Blanket
Horsewear
Manufacturer: McAlister
Model: 600D Mediumweight Turnout Blanket
Category: Horsewear
Purchase: Bought from Horseloverz.com. Do not remember exact price but it was somewhere in the range of $60-$70 I think. Bought for use for my clipped appendix mare for turnout and layering on top of a stable blanket of the same brand.
Likes: Love the double front closure system. It's adjustable via a buckle on each as is customary for front closures, but then on each there is a clip and on the other side a choice of a tighter or looser dee (2 for each closure) so all you have to do to take it on and off is to clip and unclip it. This is great since I keep my horse at a college-student co-op barn where she is getting her blanket changed twice a day by over 40 different people. This way I have control over the adjustments.
The color is very attractive--pale dusty pink with brown trim.
Good price.
Great fit around neck, which is hard to find with horse blankets at a reasonable price.
Has not yet stretched, while my McAlister stable blanket which I've had just as long has stretched a lot.
Dislikes: Slides to the left (my other 2 blankets for the same horse do not).
Leg straps are not removable (sewed on to inside of blanket at one end) and my horse tore them off within 3 months of wearing it, taking a 6" square chunk of the inside lining and fill of the blanket with it on one side.
Not particularly durable. In addition to what I stated above, she also ripped the area around where one of the surcingles attaches.
Not 100% waterproof (soaked through a little after being out in light rain for 9 hours).
Cotton lining tends to bunch in odd ways and you can't just slide the blanket off, you have to lift it, because it catches on the coat and sticks. It tends to puff out at the rear and look very bizarre.
Quality: Very pretty color, good fit around neck, does not stretch, front closure is very strong and durable, but rest of blanket is not durable and the non-removable legstraps was not a good plan. Cotton lining also an unusual idea that did not work out well.
Summary: I wouldn't necessarily say this is a horrible buy and to avoid it--if your horse is not hard on blankets I would recommend it given the price. However for horses that tear their blankets to shreds like mine, I would not recommend it because it is not even going to make it through one season.
