Manufacturer: Colorado Saddlery (View all products by Colorado Saddlery Co.)

Model: Natural Ride Bareback Saddle (View all Natural Ride Bareback Saddle/Pad reviews)

Category: Western Miscellaneous

Purchase: I borrowed this from a friend and then bought one from eBay for $60, sans stirrups. I dislike the original stirrups and added English style stirrups/webbers

Likes: It does offer the stability and security of a saddle. You can securely mount and dismount from the ground, and even carry pommel bags with your goodies in them for a trail ride. The stirrups put your legs and feet in a comfortable position and you won't roll over the horse if you get your weight thrown into one side of the stirrups or the other.

Dislikes: It only comes in a 6.5" width; my horses are much wider so the Natural Ride tends to end up at an angle with the pommel bar over their necks. It also sinks down pretty deep behind the shoulder and does not have adequate wither clearance when this happens. There is no flare on the bars under the pommel, it would fit more horses better if it had some flare to it. When going down steep hills it tends to flip forward onto the horse's neck, too - I fixed this by attaching a strap to the front of the saddle pad that I flip over the Natural Ride's pommel and pull in towards my hips when going downhill. This also helps keep my butt pushed down behind the horse's shoulder on steep ground. The original stirrups are OK but they do tend to slip, so I replaced them with English stirrups.

Quality: If the maker did a few design improvements it would be really fabulous. Needs to come in a wider gullet size, have flare added to the bar, a higher wither clearance, and better stirrup fastening.

Summary: I think it is a handy tool to have. Worth the $60 I payed on eBay but not the $200 selling price from the manufacturer. I recommend picking one up second hand and trying it out.
