Purchase: We buy all of our Hamilton Halters from American Livestock Supply, which has a large selection of sizes and colors. The prices for the halters in our collection range from $10.80 to $17.75. This is the best selection and pricing we have found, but they do not offer the "safety" option.
Likes: Every year we used to have an extra, repetitive chore on our breeding farm: hunting for halters to fit young horses at their various stages of growth. When we discovered Hamilton halters several years ago, we were able to scratch that job off the list for good.
Many brands of halters offer graduated sizes, but there is typically a gap in sizing between the suckling and weanling sizes. The gap results in a stage of growth where no halter really fits the baby. Unfortunately, that gap typically coincides with a time when halter and lead training are the most intense—at age 3-5 months.
Hamilton halters come in a range of well-proportioned sizes to ensure a good fit from birth to maturity. The best part is a halter size that bridges the suckling-weanling gap: the pony/average mini donkey halter. This size fits the tweener-weaners perfectly. And the graduation to the weanling halter is cause for a small celebration, acknowledging that Baby is no longer just an “average” mini donkey!
As our foals grow, they move from the foal halter to the pony/average mini donkey, then on to weanling, yearling, small horse, average horse, and in some cases, large horse. Halters with narrower straps are available in the “Arabian” line, for small and average heads. Other options include mini horses, drafts, and cob sizing.
Hamilton Halters are widely available from many stores and Internet sites. Each size is available as a standard halter with a single crown buckle, a halter with an adjustable nose, and a halter with a throat snap. Many sizes are also offered as safety halters, with a double-buckle and replaceable leather crown.
Dislikes: Since these halters are very strong, great care must be exercised when tying -- use quick release knots or panic snaps, as the halter will not be the first thing to break. Use extreme caution in turnout, and choose the "safety" styling with a leather crown. Also, some of these halters will stretch and loosen when they are wet, so always recheck if they have been in the rain or are used for bathing.
Quality: Hamilton nylon halters have sturdy triple-ply, double-stitched nylon construction and brass hardware that does not snap under pressure. They are of excellent quality.
Summary: Hamilton halters offer a size for every horse, a color for every owner's taste, and a price for every pocketbook.
