Purchase: Inherited this saddle from my grandmother, who bought it in ~ 1990 and used it almost daily until she stopped riding at the young age of 85.
Likes: The saddle is extremenly comfortable, especially on long rides. It's lightweight (about 22 lbs). It fits my arabian and andalusion cross perfectly...no matter how long I ride, they never have a sore back. I've used it on rental horses, quarter horses, mustangs, etc. After all these years and hard trail riding, it's still in great shape. It holds up well to rough riding - many times I've gone through bushes and trees that dragged along the saddle, but no damage.
Quality: Construction and quality is very high. Even after 25 years, the leather is still soft, the seat still cushiony. I've done very little to maintain it (leather conditioned maybe twice in 10 years), yet it still looks and feels great.
Summary: Crates is an awesome saddle for both horse and rider. They also seem to hold their value on the used market.
Usefulness Rating: 2 out of 5.
