Purchase: I paid $620 for this saddle+a wide gullet from Dover saddlery in March 2010. My arabian has a non typical arabian back-very short, very flat, forward girth pocket and uphill.
Likes: I like the panels. They are much wider than most other dressage saddles-around 33% wider. I think this really distributes the rider's weight and increases comfort for the horse. The gullet channel is generous. The stirrup bars are both set back and recessed. Overall a nice balanced saddle that's easy to ride. The saddle is lightweight but solid. I also like that Thorowgood has a template that you can download that will help you decide exactly which panel configuration and gullet you need. The flocking is very soft and break in time is very fast. The billets are movable giving you the option of a point billet. Gullet plates run wider than Wintec.
Dislikes: I can't really find anything I dislike about this saddle. It's better made and better balanced than most moderately priced leather saddles.
Quality: It appears to be solid and well made. The tree points are wrapped with some type of fabric that makes it tricky to put the saddle back together after a gullet change because the fabric bunches up. I simply removed the fabric.
The nylon strapping used on the billets needs to be a bit thicker IMO.
Summary: This is a nice well balanced saddle that offers many features to customize the fit.
Much better than the Wintecs IMO. I sold the Wintec Pro to get this one. If you really like this saddle there is a leather version called The Fairfax.
