Purchase: I needed a light-weight western saddle. I purchased a 14inch Dakota square-skirted barrel saddle from Hunn Leather in Augusta, KS, in July 2001 for $650.00.
Likes: Light-weight yet good, clean look for mid-range price. My horse is 16hh, so I wanted something light enough that I could lift above my head when saddling him (I'm 5'4"). I chose a square-skirt with minimal silver and tooling--I want functional and comfortable. Showing isn't my primary goal. After 9 years, I'm still completely satisfied with this saddle. It fit my horse very well. He's somewhat narrow, so this saddle won't fit a wide-barrel horse. I think I got a regular tree width. I know it wasn't wide.
Dislikes: Nothing. It was exactly what I wanted for the price I wanted to pay.
Quality: Excellent quality for its price. It has in-skirt rigging with an extra piece of leather that prevents the underside of the fender from catching on the rigging. Rawhide-trimmed cantle, horn and stirrups. Silver conchos, also on horn and rear girth slots. Silver is only now beginning to tarnish after 9 years of neglect on my part(never polished). I took this saddle on a 5 day ride in the Ozarks in 2005 and it was great. Still using it regularly, and now my daughter has grown into it and will use it.
Summary: I hope I can get another Dakota barrel saddle outfitted the same way with a wide tree to fit my new young horse. Couldn't be happier with this purchase.
