Purchase: I bought this saddle used in 1979 for about $200. It was the third Siegfried I had owned. My first one I bought new and loved; unfortunately, it was stolen out of my barn. My second one was too big for me, and I eventually sold it. This one, made in the Ireland factory, I used heavily for about two years and then it went into storage for about 25 years. When I started riding again, I got it out, oiled it, and it was as beautiful as ever. I have been using it heavily for the past five years or so.
Likes: This saddle is comfortable and handsome. It fits most horses, especially wider Quarter horses and warmbloods. Because of its deep seat and large knee and thigh rolls, I feel very secure in it. I rode cross-country in it (horse trials and pony club rallies) when I was younger, and now in my 50s, I cherish that security even more. I school green horses, and I'd never use anything else on them.
Dislikes: The seat is a little hard, but that only bothers me if I have been riding all day. It's very comfortable overall.
Quality: This saddle is extremely well made. It is over 40 years old and in excellent shape, and I have no doubt will outlast me. Stubben's reputation for quality is well-deserved.
Summary: A Stubben Siegfried is not a trendy saddle, but if you don't care about that, you can't do better for jumping, trail riding, or training young horses. This saddle will last a lifetime.
