All Purpose Saddles
Manufacturer: Collegiate
Model: Senior Event
Category: All Purpose Saddles
Purchase: I have never cared for the deep seat english saddles, but I saw a nice used Collegiate Sr. Event on ebay. After reading good review after good review I decided last minute to big on it. I got it for $290, mostly, I believe, because the picture in the listing was not very good.
Likes: Turned out to be a beautiful saddle, well cared for. Very pleased at the condition and quality.
The seat is extremely comfortable and I always feel like I'm in the right position, no matter the gait, no matter if it's arena or trails.
It is nicely made and fits my horse well, she moves out in the saddle like she's feeling very free and happy.
Dislikes: The leather on the actual seat is a thinner type and can scuff easily. I found the best way to counter that was to make a suede seat cover... it's like always wearing full seat breeches AND it protects the seat. Easy off for showing and we're happy campers! :)
Saddle snobs will likely not like this as their minds are already made up if it's not a high dollar model. But I've read people who have used both high dollar and Collegiate who have become converts and love their Collegiates. So if you're open minded... give it a try!
Quality: Good quality. The leather is a bit stiff but I've been oiling (for a used saddle, it was pretty lightly used, especially for the price) and it's gotten better fast.
I like the billet placement and love the recessed spot for the leathers so there's less bulk under the thigh.
Just an altogether nice and comfortable saddle, add that it's not too high dollar and this gets very enthusiastic thumbs up from me.
Summary: Very nice saddle period. Excellent saddle for the price. Love it!
Nobody better lay a hand on my Collegiate! :)
(It should be noted that this is an older model, when Miller used to own it and Ruiz Diaz used to make them. It is now owned by Weatherbeata and I've heard mixed reviews for the newer ones. It is also interesting to note that Mr. Diaz now makes saddles for Ovation, another mid-range but very nice saddle.)
