Category: All Purpose Saddles

Purchase: I found this saddle for a good price on a used tack website for $125 plus shipping. Luckily, I inquired in time to get first dibs on it! They don't make this model anymore as it says "Wintec-Bates" on it and was told it was a 90's model.

Likes: This saddle has a WIDER channel between the panels for spinal clearance. This is RARE to find in Wintec saddles nowadays because they fail to make the channel wider under the cantle to follow clearance for the horse's spine. It is very comfortable and fits both different body typed horses I have (with supplemental pads of course).

Dislikes: It does have a "smell" to it. Like sweat and rubber LOL. Don't know if that's just because of the way it was taken care of previously...

Quality: This saddle has equileather and suede. It is an older model and they don't make this type anymore. The channel between the panels is wide, has traditional wool flocking and NO gullet system (fine by me...I didn't like the gullet systems anyway...they're a pain! :p) This saddle seems to have a cutback pommel also to clear high withers. I notice the new Wintecs don't have that. It has traditional billets and requires a long english girth. It is easy for the billets to come loose from the girth buckle, so make sure you check that before you mount up.

Summary: I really like this saddle for the price I paid. I wish Wintec would still make them this way. I think it's pretty cool that it says "Wintec-Bates" on it LOL...I know now that Wintec and Bates usually are separate with their lines of saddles....even so they're made under the same company. Bates being more expensive than Wintec. If you can find a used saddle like this...I'd say go for it!
