Purchase: Owning a gaited horse, specifically a Paso Fino, means that going to a local tack shop to buy a saddle is most likely not an option. Breed specific tack is a must for the Paso Fino horse. I used the internet, Paso Fino horse magazines, and word of mouth recommendations from other Paso Fino owners to narrow my search for the ultimate gaited horse saddle. Sycamore Creek Saddles impressed me with the quality saddles offered at reasonable prices (I paid $625 for my saddle)and the informative, user-friendly website. Sycamore Creek Saddles is the exclusive representative for CTK Saddlery (Bogota, Columbia), offering handmade Colombian Paso Fino saddles, jaquimas, pads, bits and accessories for Paso Fino or other naturally gaited horses. The website for Sycamore Creek Saddles is: www.sycamorecreeksaddles.com or you can directly speak with Tony Pritchett, Exclusive U.S. Sales Representative for CTK Saddlery, at 615-847-3724 or email him at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Likes: To describe what I like about this saddle starts well before the saddle is even constructed. Sycamore Creek Saddles' user friendly website helps ensure you get the perfect saddle fit through an easy to use narrative/guide, pictures, and, if all else fails, you can call Tony Pritchett for additional guidance or clarification. The statement: "If you don't see the one you like, we'll work with you to make the saddle you envision" on Sycamore Creek Saddles website fails to encompass the service excellence you will experience when dealing with this company. Tony Pritchett personally assisted me in determining the best saddle for my daughter's horse, reviewed our saddle fit pictures/measurements, and discussed options/decorative finishes for the saddle. My daughter and I couldn't be more pleased with the high quality end product. The saddle fits perfectly, is beautiful, comfortable and durable-in other words, everything we envisioned it to be.
Dislikes: The only thing missing from the CTK Saddlery product line is a saddle for non-gaited horses. Once you have experienced the the high quality construction, the meticulous attention to detail, and the resonable cost paired with excellent customer service, you will want a CTK saddle for your other (non-gaited) horses. Talking with Tony Pritchett (Sycamore Creek Saddles), I was delighted to find out that a western saddle for non-gaited horses was being developed.
Quality: Quality, Colombian leather and materials are used in the construction of saddles from CTK Saddlery. A traditional approach is used, starting with the hand made Paso Fino/gaited horse tree. The tree is then wrapped in rawhide and sun cured for rock hard durability. The tree is guaranteed for three years under normal use. All the oiled, supple leather is hand sewn with hemp and rot-resistant nylon. The seats are padded with 1 inch of high density memory foam and a high density foam is used underneath the saddle then covered in leather. You can opt for felt or synthetic fleece at no additional charge or upgrade to real sheep skin or high quality wool felt under your saddle for an additional cost of $100. I chose leather underneath my saddle for its practicality and durability - easy to wipe off after a ride, the leather/high density foam combination has minimal compaction over time and has higher durability than synthetic fleece, real sheepskin, or felt. Decorative tooling and stitching can be added or modified as each saddle is hand made to your wishes. All saddles come with stirrups (aluminum), cinch/girth and straps (nylon) and, in most cases, a tail crupper. You can order leather straps for rigging your saddle instead of nylon for an additional $40 (the nylon straps will still be sent with your saddle - I use mine for a back-up or when I plan to ride through water). I also ordered a hand made breast collar (2A - black) for $45 and leather covered open stirrups (black) for $55/set. This is relevant as I like to get as close of a match on my leather as possible and ordering all products at the same time enables the use of the same dye lot. Although, in the hierarchy of saddle priorities, fit is king, looks are a vain, close second.
Summary: Sycamore Creek Saddles / CTK Saddlery crafts a superior saddle for gaited horses. If quality hand-crafted / individualized construction, comfort, fit and durability, meticulous attention to detail, and outstanding customer service are important to you - I would recommend Sycamore Creek Saddles / CTK Saddlery.
