Purchase: I bought this pad at my local tack store. I paid $230.00 for it (Canadian funds). I as having troubles keeping my saddle in place on steep terrain and didn't want to resort to a crupper. The lady at the tack store recommended this pad and said she uses it on her horse on all sorts of long trail rides over difficult terrain.
Likes: The pad is reversible, I like to ride with the wool part towards the underneath of my saddle as this keeps the pad from sliding down or moving at all while I ride. And the no-slip bottom on the horse keeps the saddle in place. I find I can ride in a much looser girth with this pad (checking often while riding of course!). This pad does not "scald" or burn my horse at all while riding and he goes very well in it. My saddle DOES fit but this pad amplifies all the qualities of a good fitting saddle - especially the gullet of the pad which has holes in it to prevent any pressure on the spine.
Dislikes: There really isn't anything I don't like about this pad. One thing I would tell people about in case it's a problem for them, is that this pad does make your horse sweat a lot more than other pads. I think the reason for this is that it doesn't absorb sweat the way I use it (no slip side on the horse), instead it just runs down the side. This hasn't caused us any problems while riding. There are dozens of ventilation holes in the pad.
Quality: Very well made, appears to be a pad that will last for many many years to come. I have been using this pad for two summers and it has no damage or wear at all. I just hose it down when it's dirty. It does have to be stored without any weight on it or the shape of the pad will change. (aka on top of the saddle not underneath it!)
Summary: Very well made, a bit pricey but well worth it in my opinion. I'm buying an Australian saddle and I like this pad enough that I will be buying the fitted "tucker" version for my new saddle.
