Purchase: A family friend purchased this saddle new about three years ago and paid almost $1000 for it. He decided to sell all his horses and his tack, so I decided to try the Billy Cook barrel saddle on my barrel horse.
My gelding had been experiencing some soreness in his back for quite a while. I had been using a Pro Rider barrel saddle for a few years, but his wide, thick build didn't seem to mesh well with that particular saddle. One week of riding with the Billy Cook saddle produced NO SIGNS of soreness anywhere on his back. I decided to purchase the saddle and I have been using it since.
Likes: The way this saddle sits my horse is perfect for his body shape. It is wider than any others I have tried in the past. This saddle is also quite a bit lighter than my Pro Rider Saddle which could also factor into why my horse isn't experiencing any soreness.
Dislikes: I am not particularly fond of the tooled leather designs on the saddle. It is somewhat plain; however, I did not originally order/purchase the saddle for myself so there are other options.
Quality: Even though the saddle is a few years old, it looks new. It has held up very well in not so desirable conditions. The leather on the cantle is put together nicely and looks as though it will endure a lot.
This saddle is very light which is ideal for anyone competing in the sport of barrel racing. It sits a horse well.
Summary: A good friend, Laurie Cooper won a Billy Cook barrel saddle many years ago. She still uses her saddle today and recommends them to anyone who asks. Her experience with the brand is another factor that played into my decision to purchase the saddle in the first place. She has been pretty successful on a few different horses, and this brand of saddle worked great with all of them.
