Manufacturer: Point Two
Model: Point Two Air Jacket
Category: English Miscellaneous
Purchase: I bought my Point Two Air Jacket from Smart Pak Equine for $699.95 and an extra CO2 cartridge for $50. Although I am a dressage rider and do little jumping, I broke my sacrum 2 years ago and landed on the same place this year. I wanted protection while riding my young horses but didn't want the bulk of a traditional body protector that would affect my seat and position.
Likes: I love the fit and the fact that, for the most part, I can't tell I am wearing the vest. The fit is great and I am thrilled with the coverage from my neck to past the coccyx. It has not yet been activated in a fall or any other way but I really appreciate the extra measure of protection it offers without sacrificing my seat. My husband and I are similarly sized so he can use the vest when he does cross country (over his regular vest). It is the fastest inflating vest in the industry and the company's been in business 25 years.
Dislikes: Despite the fact that it is padded for ventilation and is not form fitting like traditional vests, it is still hot in the humid summer. While it has the fastest activation, it is also currently the most expensive inflatable vest. It has not yet been approved as the sole protection for cross country riders.
Quality: The vest is made of ballistic nylon and heavy duty poly. It seems quite substantial and easy to take care of. Smart Pak claims it can be easily washed if the air bag is removed but the instruction manual says to sponge off only. The velcro features for adjustment and better fit (to reduce the bulk unless the jacket is activated) are a great feature.
Summary: Although a bit pricey, the extra insurance and confidence (with a good fit and quality) this jacket affords are well worth it. I never ride without a helmet and this jacket fits the same principle--every time, every ride. Even the best horse on a perfect day can have an accident and life is too short when there are great products such as this.
