Purchase: I bought this former test saddle in "nearly new" condition on eBay for $1800, approx half of what it retails for, in Aug 2010.
Likes: It's made with nice leather & felt sturdy. Easy to put the stirrup leathers on & it has long girth straps. It has a nice, deep seat & felt good when I rode in it. It balanced nicely (front to back) on my Appendix QH's back so I didn't need a riser pad.
Dislikes: I rode in this saddle once & happened to have a vet come out for chiropractic & saddle-fitting the next day. She showed me how the MW tree fit great on the left side, but not on the right. It was tighter to his right shoulder and had bridging. Looking at the saddle's underside, the flocked panels weren't symmetrical nor were they attached evenly on the saddle.
Quality: It felt like it was sturdy & would last years, but being a former test saddle, there were already marks from the stirrup leathers and the bottom of the billet flaps showed wear from people test riding with their tall boots.
Summary: I was disappointed. I researched a lot before buying this saddle & I trusted the Stubben name. The saddle can be fixed by re-flocking it & re-attaching the padding evenly, but a nearly new saddle shouldn't need that, in my opinion. My horse had reacted to the bridging & pinching just as the vet said he would, having difficulty in the right lead. Recommend people only buy this saddle in a store or from somewhere online that accepts returns so you can ensure yours is even & symmetrical.
