Purchase: I bought it online at KO Trading. I paid $74.99 plus $13.80 shipping to CA. I bought this bareback pad to replace my older english (girth style) Diamond Wool Suede Bareback Pad which is still in perfect shape even after 7 years. I have a high withered horse now and wanted to try the new "cutback" style to see the difference and was very pleased.
Likes: I like the wool bottom and how it forms to my horses back to give you a close contact feel. I love the suede seat and how secure it makes me feel when riding on steep terrain. The new wither relief design fits my tall withered gelding much better than the older version. I ordered it in green and love how vibrant the color is. This pad stays in place well and helps give me a secure seat even when going up steep hills.
Dislikes: I don't like that you have to buy separate rigging to attach a western girth. I feel like that should be included with the bareback pad. I also really don't like the bulk of the latigo under my leg when I ride (at anything faster than a walk) it gets in the way of my legs when I grip to hold on. I will order the english "girth" version instead, even though I'm not thrilled with the metal buckle digging into my horse's side on the older english girth version; I hope they improved the buckle on the newer english model.
Quality: These bareback pads are very well constructed. The suede is smooth and soft yet strong, and the nylon webbing runs under the suede seat making the seat smooth under your legs and bum; unlike a lot of competitors' bareback pads which have the nylon webbing on top of the seat which is uncomfortable if you ride in shorts or thin breeches. I like the dee rings for a breastplate, but I have not needed to use them since the pad just becomes one with my horse and never slips.
Summary: This is without a doubt the BEST bareback pad on the market. I can't wait to get the "girth" version of this bareback pad and hit the trails!!!
