Purchase: I purchased Renegade Hoof Boots through our barefoot farrier. I paid $180. The farrier recommended this product to help our horse through the shoes to barefoot transition. Our mare also had trouble with a crack in the left fore that went up between the wall and the inner sole. Wearing a boot would protect this hoof from further splits and allow it to grow out whole.
The boots are well constructed and easy to put on. However, the velcro is a big problem. The route to trails on our ranch crosses water twice in the wet season. The boots do not handle the wet then dry crossing. After about 2 months, the velcro would not longer stay sealed at a trot despite the keepers.
In less than one year, the wire inside the boot gave out. The boot flipped off the horse and fell on the trail. I was told that perhaps the horse had "clipped" the wire.
I purchased the boots as I felt they would be very sturdy and hold up to normal horse activity. We do not use the boots daily. When the ground is soft from the rain, we do not use the boots for weeks at a time.
After each use, I rinse and air dry the boots.
I feel that the product should be sturdier given the "gold standard" price and the maintenance I have put into them. For this price I would not recommend Renegade Hoof Boots.
