Manufacturer: Steele Custom Saddles
Category: Trail Saddles
Purchase: I had looked for several years for a saddle that would fit my TWH and be secure for me. After going through several saddles, even a Timberline which was great for my horse but heavy to lift and not secure. I saw the adds for Steele in Trail Rider, did some research and finally ordered a demo Steele Classic. Very comfortable, so I ordered one,$2085 with light wt tree. In talking with one of the guys he suggested I try a Frontier demo for a ride I was going on in the Smokeys. Absolutely fell in love with it. Called them 2 weeks after placing my order and they said it was no problem changing to Frontier.
Likes: EXTREMELY COMFORTABLE the only way to describe it is you sit IN this saddle not on it. We did several 6-8 hr rides over 4 days and I was the only one no walking bow legged or taking lots of Aleve. The other 7 people riding would take breaks to stretch and even got off to walk the trail leading their horses because they were so sore. All I wanted to do was stay in the saddle and keep riding. My horse absolutely loved it to. He even got into a very smooth, relaxed, comfortable (for both of us) running walk which he had never done before. The craftsmanship of this saddle is like none I have seen. Beautiful soft leather no squeaks, No tooling but this saddle doesn't need it. Very classy looking. Lots of rings, I am having some extra rings put on the front of the pommel as I am use to having a horn and need some place to secure my pommel bag. Speaking of the horn- I thought I couldn't ride without one Boy was I wrong. I no longer am in fear of hooking my shirt going up steep hills or getting off and giving every one a show. The design of the saddle gives a great secure hand hold if needed.
Dislikes: There is nothing I don't like. I did read the other postings regarding Steele saddles so I ordered the nylon billets.
Quality: The stitching and construction of this saddle are far above anything else I have seen out there. Little to no padding in the seat but you don't need it as you sit in it. Love that there is no fleece on the underside, you can actually see the underside of the saddle. Had to get fenders and stirrups a little longer as I have long legs but that was absolutely not a problem.
Summary: I know these saddles are expensive but they are definitely well worth every penny. This is a forever saddle to hand down to your kids. Also in looking for used saddles on line for the past 2 years I never saw a single Steele Custom for sale. I think this should say it all.
