Purchase: I bought this Blue River barrel saddle from equinecloset.com for $525.00. They had the best price, as I've seen this saddle sell for much more than this. It was drop shipped and shipping was really fast.
Likes: What I like: 1. 5 inch cantle and padded pink suede seat 2. very nice thick, yet supple leather- the leather is NOT stiff! 3. The stirrups turned out nicely without killing my knees in the process. 4. Bullhide covered hardwood tree 5. white rawhide accents on horn, pommel and cantle 6. love the beautiful tooling on the saddle 7. 5 year warranty on the tree This is a taller/deeper cantle than what I've been riding in. I trail ride and I really like the deeper seat a lot more! Going up and down steep inclines- it really holds you in. The saddle is just really gorgeous. My leathersmith put ties on the back (story below) and he said that the leather used on this saddle is really a great quality and he was impressed!
Dislikes: I really don't like the fact that the fenders are rough out. I much prefer to have tooled. I've never owned a rough out before, however after doing some riding in it the last few weeks, it is growing on me. I still might consider buying new fenders for it later on down the road if it starts to look bad. I'm using the saddle for trail riding and it didn't come with any trail rigging on the back skirting on the conchos (no ties or D rings). So I had to take it in to my leathersmith and he pulled up the silver conchos and put in D rings under them and then attached leather ties that he dyed pink to match the seat. Now it works great for tying on my saddle bags, and I was able to reuse the original conchos that match the saddle. But it would have been nice to have it already come that way. The pink suede seat isn't as dark pink as what is shown on the online pictures. It is much lighter! I'd rather have had the hot pink seat, but it's very pretty anyway. I don't like the leather latigo cinch tie that comes with it- going to replace it with a pink nylon one soon!
Quality: (taken from the saddlery website) *Suede Padded seat with FIVE INCH cantle for extra comfort and security on the ride. *Extra Heavy #1 Skirting Leather for Extra Long Wear. *Cut out skirts ensure the closest contact between the horse and the rider. *Bull Hide Covered Hardwood Tree Guaranteed five years. *3" Rawhide Plaited horn. *Complete with horn cap and Conchos *Oak and acorn combination tooling on skirts and swell. *2 1/2" inch Stirrup Leathers with Hand Laced, Rawhide Covered Stirrups. *Stainless Steel C Rigging in 3/4 position.
Summary: I was very concerned that this saddle might be constructed of a cheaper, stiffer and lesser quality leather due to the fact that this saddle is more of a mid range buy (between $500-$600). I actually looked at a lot of saddles and considered many of them for over a year before buying this saddle. This was by no means, an impulse buy. I thought it out and did as much reading about it as I could. I ended up taking the chance on buying this saddle simply because it is so beautiful and I love the contrast of the pink suede seat with the white rawhide accents, the deep seat, and the beautiful tooling- which is just as beautiful in person, I might add! I'm very relieved with the quality of this saddle. (My other saddle is very high quality, so I'm accustomed to a saddle feeling a certain way). I was really wanting a "pretty" saddle with a lot of bling and asthetic looks to it - but I didn't want to compromise quality due to my budget. I'm still amazed at how great this leather is, and how well the seat feels. It's not overly padded at all- its really just perfect. So far, it has drawn a lot of attention with my friends, too as this saddle is very flashy. I'm really happy with this saddle and I would recommend it to anyone. Don't be afraid to buy this!
