Purchase: I purchased a DK at the recommendation of my instructor. It was custom fit based upon my horses back shape and conformation, as well as my inseam, seat measurement etc. It cost $4,700.
Likes: It is the most comfortable saddle I have ever ridden in! The thigh blocks are fantastic. The leather is of superior quality and has maintained it's suppleness extremely well over 4 years, with minimal maintenance. I especially love the custom colored stripe you can add along the seat :-)
Dislikes: The fitting to the horse. It has always tended to creep up his withers, but it is getting worse over time, despite saddle fittings every 6 months. At my last show the just made a comment that the saddle is not fitting the horse - it is sitting on his shoulders. When I was unable to make changes before my next ride with the same judge she expressed even more concern. When I use other saddles my horse can perform shoulder in and renvers much better, I think because the saddles sit far enough back to where he can actually MOVE his shoulders!
Quality: Fantastic!
Summary: The price can be a deterrent, and the every 6 month saddle fittings can only be done by the owner of the company. These cost well over $200 per visit, so a large maintenance expense here. Schleese will not touch the saddles due to legal issues between the two companies. I am upset by the poor fit, and have never had trouble fitting a saddle to my horse before. So, maybe it's just me saddle, but I caution people about that.
