Purchase: I purchased the bit by calling the number in their ad on the back cover of Western Mule Magazine. It cost $130; too much. I bought it to use on my young mule we were training.

Likes: There isn't anything I can think of that I liked about it.

Dislikes: The bit is not easy to get on. The curb chain has to be unfastened or the nose strap slides down getting in the animal's mouth. It created a problem bitting my mule. When riding it did not stop my mule unless I pulled his nose around to his rump. After trying it for several months I changed to a simple straight bit with a shank. He takes the bit calmly; I ride with a loose rein and he stops easily.

Quality: I guess the bit is well constructed but the design is ineffective. I gave it to a mule friend who cut and replaced the nose strap and tried to reconstruct it to work better. He wasn't impressed either.

Summary: I spoke with another mule rider last week who said she didn't need to work out with her weights after trying to hold her mule back. When I inquired as to the kind of bit she was using, she showed me the Myler bit like mine. It was an expensive lesson. I won't buy another one.
