Purchase: Valley Vet $14.95 I have used Cavallo simple boots for several years on various horses. Until recently I did not have a problem with pastern or heel bulb rubs, but after having to switch farriers I had a horse that received a trim job that resulted in her foot being cut down from wearing a 2 or 3 size boot to a 1 size boot. So here I am fitting a sore footed 16H big boned horse into a 1 boot. To make things worse, the foot was trimmed in such a way that the foot would land unevenly and would rotate as it was being placed down. Since there was no foot to work with to correct the bad trim, the only option was to keep the horse in boots while riding until her feet had time to grow back out. To alleviate the pastern and heel bulb rubbing I bought the new style foam pastern wraps from Cavallo that are pictured covering the heel bulb and extending up the pastern with a center Velcro attachment and with the side Velcro straps that snug the heel bulb area to the top front of the wrap.

Likes: I really liked the idea of being able to cover the heel bulb area as well as the pastern area. The wrap in the sale picture looked great.

Dislikes:

Quality: The material of the wrap is a very thin stretchy foam neoprene that has small holes in it. I assume the holes are for breathability purposes. The new design with the front velcro closure and the addition of the angular side closure does seem to help hold the wrap in place if you get it positioned just right. After a week of daily use, the wraps are showing some wear in the neoprene, so I don't expect them to last more than a few months of daily riding.

Summary: These wraps seem to be designed to prevent heel bulb and pastern rubbing. From the promo pictures it looks like they should work. It would have been better if the wraps actually fit and looked like the promo picture on my horse's feet. You definitely should buy your sizing based on the width and height of your horse's heel bulb to pastern taking pastern and coronary band width into consideration rather than the fit of the boots. I put the small wraps on my small boned 14.2H horse who wears a size 1 and they barely came to the top of her Cavallo boots and thus were too short to protect from pastern rubs. I think a small wrap must be for a miniature or a small pony as far as how high up these wraps are going to cover is concerned. If you can get them to stay put and fit, they do prevent the rubbing. I guess it is a toss up whether buying and using vet wrap and putting it on every time you ride is going to be cheaper or faster to get on versus these wraps. I think once you do get a pair that fits the width and height of your horses heel bulb/pastern and can get a system down to get them properly fitted each time, they do work. I don't know if most people are going to want to go through all the trial and error that I had to go through.
