Purchase: We purchased directly from Nelson Mfg. I am thinking it was around $400 for the waterer and optional heater unit. We bought about 8 years ago.

Likes: I like the automatic fill option using a counterbalance system rather than a paddle or float. I always had a problem with horses that like to play with the paddle with waterers resulting in flooding the stall. Also had issues with the float model waterers having leaking problems from breaking seals and plastic parts resulting in the stall being flooded. I also like the idea of having the water not freeze in winter with an automatic heater. I like stainless steel for longevity versus plastic. I liked the idea of being able to mount the bowl on the wall versus taking up the space of a free standing unit.

Dislikes: They are expensive! This wall unit mounts on a wall. You must have some way to insulate the water pipe and fittings in the wall. The heater is totally ineffective at keeping the bowl and water line from freezing and I live in Texas, so the winter's don't get nearly as bad here. We use the Nelson steel free standing models with optional heaters outside in the pastures and they work great at heating and preventing the water line and water in the bowl from freezing. I think the parts in the wall modules must be a lot cheaper than the free standing units because we usually have to replace parts every winter as the lines and water fittings for the waterer freeze up, the thermostat goes bad or the gaskets/fittings just wear out and result in water leaking out of the wall and flooding the stall. I really hate this model, I wish I had paid $100 more to get the free standing model. This model with the optional heater is a total waste of money. You will more than make up the price difference in buying repair parts, replacement of shavings from a flooded stall, and mental aggravation at having such an expensive item constantly require maintenance. If you are not mechanically inclined and a do-it-yourself fixer, one emergency plumbing repair bill will cost as much as the waterer. If you install this in a wall, be sure to leave a quick access door to the water fittings and be sure to have a water turnoff to the waterer below ground level where you can get to it because you are going to need it when the fittings leak, flood your stall and you need to turn off the water to the waterer without shutting off the entire water to the barn.

Quality: Well built steel housing. Counterbalance system usually works well, but does require periodic adjustment or can flood your stall. Hard for a horse to destroy this unit. Cheap water connection fittings that constantly break, thermostats seem to go out a lot and do not kick on at freezing temps.

Summary: I would never recommend this waterer to anyone if they are wanting an automatic heated waterer. Get the free standing unit instead, we have had the both kinds and the wall units are poorly designed requiring constant repair, whereas the free standing units have been great and rate a 5.
