Purchase: I purchased this bit new online from Jeffers Equine. I paid about $33 for it. I had recently agreed to train a friend's 9 years old mare that had previously only been ridden a few weekends monthly for pleasure. I began in a french link eggbut but she proved to be stubborn and hot and needed something stronger to get the point across.

Likes: The bit was effective in curbing her poor behavior under saddle. I like the flexibility of having two choices for leverage. this gave me the opportunity to slowly wean her off the pressure.

Dislikes: This is an extremely harsh bit. You will NEVER get your horse truly on the bit with this monster. It should only be used temporarily to correct excessive disregard for the bit. When your horse RESPONDS well to this bit, you should return to a simple snaffle and if that does not work, a pelham.

Quality: Made of quality stainless steel. It has a single joint and the bars are curved to alleviate bar pressure. It has 2 slots to vary the leverage of the bit (the top has the least leverage, the bottom has the most). A curb chain with hooks is included and can be handy. If your horse is sensitive to it, it may be removed with pliers or you can buy a chain guard.

Summary: Quality bit that is effective in experienced hands. This is not a long-term solution for bad behavior. In the hands of a beginner, this bit will cause more problems than it will solve. Before you use this bit to reprimand a speedy horse, be sure he is truly running through the bridle and is not just nervous. If you're not sure if this bit is appropriate, try something else first and ALWAYS consult a trainer.
