Purchase: I purchased this from Horse saddle shop.com for around $1500 and had to pay import duty and tax, so overall not a cheap saddle. I was looking for a quality product that would also provide comfort and would enable me to continue riding (have bad back and knees.) Making a move from English to Western seemed the perfect solution. I had always wanted a genuine western saddle, and had done a lot of research before settling on Circle Y Brand - the majority of western saddles seen here in UK are just dire - cheap imports mainly from France and eastern Europe.
Likes: Nice tooling, not over the top, as didn't want to look like something from a cowboy film, lots of handy strings and finished in a lovely rich walnut colour. Most important the fenders are soft, preturned and the suede seat is deep and and comfy, better than my mares dressage saddle. I had thought about giving up riding as I'm no spring chicken, but found this saddle just great. Maybe there is hope for us oldies switching from English to Western. Best of all the semi quarter horse bars fits my TB X Irish hunter high withered horse like a dream. She certainly hasn't complained yet.
Dislikes: I was a bit worried about the J rigging and nylon latigo straps as it seemed a bit fiddley but got used to them quickly. Pity it didn't come with a back cinch, as had to buy this separately. The weight of the saddle is the only real downer, I'm 5'7" and slinging a 29lbs saddle on a 16hh horse might become a problem in the future - I might need help at some point.
Quality: The beautiful pre oiled Herman Oak leather screams quality. Excellent construction and well finished, the tooling detail is just lovely. As this will be my only western saddle I assume that its quality will show over time.
Summary: My family, horsey and non-horsey friends have admired this saddle and are genuinely surprised at how beautiful and comfortable a western saddle can be. I would certainly recommend Circle Y to my English horsey friends.
