Purchase: We were having trouble fitting our fox trotters with trail saddles. After reading the reviews of Sycamore Creek Saddles in Horse Tack, we ordered these saddles in December, 2010. Each of these 3 saddles cost $525, plus $35 shipping.
Likes: These CTK saddles are wonderful. We now have 3 of them for our fox trotters. All of them are beautiful. The leather and workmanship are of high quality; most of all, the saddles are very comfortable for both horse and rider and seem to function very well.
Surprisingly, especially for a saddle this inexpensive, we were able to customize them. We measured the angle of our horses' backs just behind the withers; Tony Pritchett (owner of Sycamore Creek Saddles and sole U.S. rep of these Colombian-built saddles) asked us to photograph the Romex wire-measuring process and provide additional photos of our horses' backs to be sure our measurements were correct. The saddles have thick memory foam padding on the underside along with a very deep and wide channel along the horses' spine for air circulation and further back protection. We elected to have rough-out leather on the underside so the saddles wouldn't move on the pads (they don't!) The saddles flare out at the shoulders to give the horse lots of room to move. They are also relatively short and don't interfere at the rear. We found the saddles left symmetric, uniform contact marks and felt that we only needed a 1/2" thick saddle pad. The trail saddles we selected weigh 20 pounds or less.
We were able to further customize these saddles as far as leather color, choice of stirrups, rigging material and style of tapadero (if any). Also, since I am short the saddle makers shortened the fenders for me by using my inseam measurement. With their narrow waist, memory foam under the rider's seat and close contact these are the most comfortable saddles we've ever had. The craftsmanship is excellent in all of them; one of my saddles (TAS003) is absolutely gorgeous with some mighty snazzy stitching.
Since we received these saddles during winter in Wisconsin, we've only ridden in our indoor round pen and down a gravel road. But so far both our horses and we are really smiling and couldn't be happier. We can't wait to hit the trails with them!
Dislikes: Nothing.
