Purchase: I acquired this saddle on ebay. I couldn't believe my luck when I was looking for a Dressage saddle and found this. It wasn't a Dressage saddle but an All Purpose. The lady who sold it knew nothing about english saddles as she rode western and had received the L&R as a gift. She never used it and then sold her horse. So onto Ebay the saddle went where she put it under the wrong category. It was a nail biting bidding war at the end of the auction and I won!
I paid $90.! I believe prayer helped! 2 different riders have offered me over $500. I will not part with this saddle for anything.
If this saddle had been put under All Purpose, it's right category, if she had put good photos onto Ebay, I could never have afford it.
As it was, miscatagorized, it still drew 14 bidders, we just all clogged the phones at the same time.
I just feel blessed that it was me who received this wonderful saddle.
Likes: It is so comfortable for me and my horses.
I have a bad back and in order to compete, I need a saddle that is super correct and this saddle makes you sit correct. It fits my body like a glove and over big fences I feel secure. It is even supportive when I do dressage.The leather is supple, gorgeous and the saddle is simply beautiful. It has to be over 30 years old but it doesn't look it. I am a trainer and instructor and so have had the pleasure of riding all brands of saddles and this is my favorite by far. The closest saddle to this that feels somewhat the same is a Lucinda Greene that I had.
Dislikes: That I don't have another one.
Quality: Outstanding workmanship. Beautiful stitching. Soft yet firm seat, great grip for my thighs, supple leather through out.
For all its use over these many years it looks like it is only a few years old.
It looks beautiful, feels wonderful and will probably outlast me.
Can't say enough about how well this saddle is made.
Summary: THEY DON'T MAKE SADDLES LIKE THEY USED TO!!
My dad used to say, "Buy the best tack you can afford and you won't have to buy the same thing again. How true! Back then, Craftsmanship was a true art, not something mass produced. This saddle is a piece of beautiful history. I just love it!
I am so grateful and feel so blessed that I got this saddle.
If you EVER have the chance to get a new or used L&R, take it. You will not regret one moment of being in a Lovatt Ricketts saddle.
