Trail Saddles
Manufacturer: Steele Custom Saddles
Model: Trailboss Model
Category: Trail Saddles
Purchase: Read about the free 2 week trial period that Steele Custom Saddles had, so I decided to try it. I ordered the Trail Boss model from them, with some custom work for about $ 2,200.
Likes: Can't think of a thing. They will not pad the seat even if you beg. The seat is very deep and secure, but you're put in one position only and have no room to adjust yourself differently on a long ride. You end up seated on your crotch, and are top heavy.
Dislikes: Where do I start ? I was told the wait would be 6 weeks, but it was over 9 weeks. The saddle came and I took it on an out-of-town trail ride and it sored my horse. I layed it side by side with the demo, and they did not match. I called Eric at Steele to see if I was doing something wrong and he ruded me out right away. Their website said satisfaction guaranteed, but they wouldn't take it back. I sent it back, but they offered to reimburse me 40%, I said NO, so they made me pay to ship it back to me. Eric told me there was something wrong with me and threatened with an attorney right away.
Quality: Steele Custom Saddles is an old hillbilly saddlery. There is zero customer service. I was always polite and nice and just wanted someone to help me figure out the problem. The saddle is made by hillbillies, very old-fashioned with nails, the leather is really thick and card-boardish. Very plain. I've since then heard it only takes a few hundred dollars to make that saddle. For the price, and all the hype this saddle is totally over-rated. You can go to other professional saddle makers that will treat you like gold, and make a way nicer saddle for half the price or even less.
Summary: The new saddle did not fit my horse as the demo was old, stretched out, and the materials compressed. Pictured side by side with the demo, looks like two different saddles. I also didn't know that Steele Custom saddle has a "one size fits all" tree. They never asked for pictures of my horse or did any saddle-fitting. Contrary to what they say about Customer Satifaction, they do not care what you have to say once they have your money in their pockets. I have never, ever been treated so rudely in my whole life. They are a bunch of hillbillies laughing in the back room over all the money people spend on their $ 200 saddle. Knowing what I do now, I wouldn't buy a leather string from them.
