Purchase: I bought this saddle on ebay for $100.
Likes: This saddle is an older model Courbette (1981). It was made by Kloster Schonthal in Germany. I had to have two billets replaced, but it is in fantastic condition otherwise. It has no pads, no rolls, and no blocks. The seat is quite flat. It is the best balanced saddle I have ever ridden in. It also allows me to feel the horse in a way that none of the newer, padded saddles (leather or synthetic) have been able to do. The horses I ride also love it. One mare who has a perpetually stiff back due to a past case of EPM and poorly fitting saddles, actually relaxes with this saddle. I've never seen her this happy.
Dislikes: Absolutely nothing.
Quality: It wears like iron. The pommel is reinforced with steel, and I think it could withstand just about anything. The leather is still soft and supple, with a grippy texture, and believe it or not, the seat isn't rock hard (like older Stubbens). It's actually quite comfortable.
Summary: These old saddles are still the best, in my opinion, for both riders and horses. They help riders achieve a solid, correct position, and relieve the horses' backs. Guess I'm just old fashioned. (They're also a great deal - a few hundred dollars vs. a few thousand.)
