Manufacturer: Clinton Anderson
Model: Knotted Rope Halter
Category: Training Equipment
Purchase: I bought this halter on a what-the-heck whim after viewing just one episode of Clinton Anderson. I bought the halter from his web store; I think it was $29. I LOVE IT! I could not believe how quickly my horse responded to the rope halter used as directed by Anderson's instructions (on his club website television episodes.) After a week of success, I downloaded episode after episode of his training instructions. Worth every penny (which was, only $20 a month - 1/3 of one session with a trainer).
Likes: It is actually very light but strong. It is not heavy like a chain; it is not soggy like a soft rope halter. It is only active if the horse pushes against it and you chose to activate the knots by wiggling. It is much more gentle than the chain-over-nose; and unlike chain, it actually teaches the horse what you want. So after a short time, the horse has learned how to walk nicely. It is a training tool (as in teaching good behavior), whereas I find the chain-on-nose is just a management tool (as in managing bad behavior). After a bit of initial resistance, my husband was a convert. He bought the whole halter, rope and stick system for his horse too.
Dislikes: I love everything about it. I bought one for every sized horse that I deal with.
Quality: Anderson's rope halter is much better than the soft rope halters I see around the barn. The stiffness holds itself up off the horse's face, and is much more useful than a two-knot soft rope halter. It can DO more things.
Summary: Buying this halter was the first step I took into the Anderson training program. I stepped into this program carefully after being frustrated with English trainers' inability to get any cooperation from my horse. Parrelli was just too complicated with too much psycho-babble for me to use. From Day 1, Anderson's instructions worked, they were simple to understand and implement, and I saw results immediately. Eventually, I applied the entire training program to my horse and now people compliment me on what a nice, quiet horse I have. What a turn-around!
