Purchase: I paid $1050. I contacted Allegany Saddles about finding a saddle for my draft cross mare. They sent me a bunch of plastic trees from Steele trees. I tried them all, took a number of pictures, sent them to Staci, the owner, and she evaluated them. I had to redo some of the pictures because she couldn't evaluate some of the trees very well from the pictures I sent. She determined the best fitting tree for my horse and had the saddle made on that tree.
Likes: I ended up with the Renegade Endurance. It was made to my specifications - so I like just about everything on the saddle. It is lightweight; great for me since I am a small person. It has a tacky nicely padded seat, rough out leather on the seat jockey, a pencil roll in front (which helps keep the weight of the saddle down), and a rear cinch to help stabilize the saddle on my roundish mare. The saddle is lined with wool felt, which is great....I think it will hold up better to wear and tear than the synthetic fleece.
Dislikes: The cantle is curved and is a bit high. I would prefer a lower cantle that didn't curve around at the ends.
Quality: The quality is great. The leather is very nice, it has simple tooling which I like. The tie down straps can be removed easily if not needed. The pencil roll in the front of the saddle is a perfect size to grab if a spook comes along.
Summary: The service from this company is beyond anything I have ever experienced. The first saddle I ordered, a Wade, weighed more than I was initially told. I couldn't get it over my tall horse. Staci let me keep it while she made another saddle, the Renegade Endurance, that was lighter weight. She adjusted the placement of the cinch ring to conform to the girth channel of my horse, as well as numerous other refinements (placement of rings, types of rings and tie down straps, added rough out leather, etc. I was able to make all these changes to the saddle without any extra charge. She sent me pictures of it during its construction to check on things. I was amazed at the high level of service and effort!!! On top of this, the saddle was made on the tree that fit my horse!! And at a reasonable price. I highly recommend Allegany saddle.
