Category: Roping Saddles
Purchase: I ordered this saddle directly from Corriente because my new horse needed a wide tree(full quarter horse bars). They made it to my specifications (within their range of styles), and it was at my door within 30 days. I paid under $800 for it, delivered.
Likes: It is comfortable for both myself and my horse. I love the smooth leather hard seat. It seems to be durable, but I've only had it 6 months. It was affordable. I could not afford an expensive saddle and I could not find a used one with a wide quarter horse tree. I ride the saddle every week and my horse and I are in perfect comfort. I love the dropped plate rigging. I love that I got to have it semi-custom made the way I wanted it.
Dislikes: It is cheap Mexican leather and the tooling is stamped. But what do you expect for this price? It is not ugly. It's not thin or flimsy leather, just has a few flaws here and there. The metal on the rigging is a little rough and I filed it off a bit so the leather on the back cinch wouldn't get worn by it. The D for the breast collar is a little too far under the front. It has cheap synthetic fleece, but you can just use a good pad. Not crazy about the color, but oil fixed that.
Quality: The tree seems to be tight and straight. It is a traditional, heavy saddle on a wood tree. As mentioned, the metal could have been smoothed out a little more. Also I can see that the rivets holding the dropped front rigging might wear on the underside of the stirrup someday. I'm happy with the quality and it is better than many more expensive saddles that I've seen.
Summary: If you need a wide quarter horse saddle (which is the only kind they make) I would recommend this one. I think I enjoy this one more than I would an expensive saddle, because I'm not afraid to abuse it (rain, mud, etc.) I would order from Corriente again if I need another saddle of this type. I would give it a 5 for the price, if I had not had to smooth down those Ds on the back cinch.
Usefulness Rating: 2.5 out of 5.
