Purchase: bought this saddle second hand off a lady for $750. Not a bad buy considering it was less than 2yo and others the same were selling second hand for $900. It was advertised as 17inch, but when it arrived and I had a ride in it, it was massive. I ended up emailing the serial number to thorowgood and they told me its actually 18inch...which is way too big for my butt and too long for my 14.2hh pony. I had to on sell it to find something smaller =(
Likes: I liked how the seat and knees were so grippy and the material on them looked like grained leather. Its quite well made and the adjustable girth point system is quite handy. Its got a really comfy seat, even though I was swimming in it. Didn't squeak as much as other synthetic saddles do.
Dislikes: The edges of the flap aren't rolled, so they look a little untidy and even started to fray a little. The saddle seemed to be built for very flat backed horses, as the saddle bridged on both my arabxash mare and my TB mare (who dont have anything close to sway backs). The bridging went away a bit once it was girthed up, but it wasnt a great fit. I could not find where the gullet plate was inserted or how to change it. The FISH system in it was good, but where they slide in interferes with the velcro knee blocks and wouldnt allow me to put the blocks up higher for my short legs. Also, the synthetic on the flaps curls upwards...
Quality: Quite well made, would hold up quite well with lots of use. Didnt like that the tree was very straight and the end of the panels seemed to dig into the horses loin/kidney area. The material that they use is a million times better than wintec material and looks so much more like leather. Its very grippy too.
Summary: I would maybe like to try a 17inch and have it reflocked to try and change the flatness of the panels. But I wasnt very impressed about the curling flaps or the fraying. For the money I paid, I couldve got a better quality 2nd hand kieffer or stubben or something
