Purchase: I bought this saddle through Sycamore Creek Saddles for under $700. I worked with Tony Pritchett to order the saddle because CTK brand had been recommended to me by a lady who owns Paso Finos. I ride my Arabs treeless (Bob Marshall) but my Paso Fino gelding was not comfortable treeless, no matter how I tried to pad the saddle for him. I was told by several people that the only treeless I would get to fit on his narrow, A-framed back was going to be in excess of $2,000. Out of my budget so I had to go back on my promise to myself to never buy a treed saddle again. This saddle arrived in around 6 weeks. It was sent 2-day FedEx and Tony emailed me the tracking number at both my email addresses.
Likes: This saddle is beautifully made. The leather is butter soft, supple, and does NOT need any breaking in! Just get on and ride! The stitching is tight and even, and every aspect of the saddle is very high quality. I absolutely LOVE the thick, soft foam padding underneath the saddle against the horse. I have never seen a saddle that "cushy" for the horse. The memory foam seat is great for me too. I rode in it today and was shocked that I could NOT feel the saddle tree with my seat bones. Normally my boney seat bones are jammed into the tree and get so sore after just a few minutes. This was my biggest fear with going to a treed saddle - the pain a tree always causes me. My horse gaited out just fine and he seemed comfortable and happy. I can tell right away if a saddle is bothering him, and he did not complain. This saddle came with a beautiful, soft leather crupper but my horse is super hot and nervous about anything on his hind end so I will have to train him to that very slowly. The center fire rigging on this saddle is perfect! That is always my favorite as it stabilizes the saddle front and back. I also love that the stirrups are built in such a fashion to be turned for you so there is no pressure on your knees. The stirrup leathers are very easy to adjust, and have numbered holes for accuracy. The extra d-rings I had added were placed perfectly. I had some fancy buck stitching added along the cantle, and it turned out beautiful!
Dislikes: There is nothing that I don't like! I prefer my padded endurance stirrups, and I like more padding underneath the girth, against the horse. The felt sewn onto the underside of the leather girth is pretty thin so I might try to add another layer. But those are just minor personal preferences and easily fixable.
Quality: Perfect stitching, very high quality, super soft but thick leather and materials, and very solid construction. I had requested some special rings be installed on the flap behind my leg, and the saddle maker went above and beyond to make it work. The end result is perfect and exactly what I wanted. I have seen $2,500 saddles that had leather only half this quality. The saddle was made according to the measurements and photos I sent and fits my horse very well.
Summary: Bottom line? If you have a Paso Fino (or any gaited horse) you NEED a CTK saddle from Sycamore Creek Saddles! Tony provides a very high level of customer service, he guarantees his saddles, and that is something you just can't find anymore. I would absolutely recommend this super company and brand! BUY WITH CONFIDENCE, YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY!
