Manufacturer: Australian Stock Saddle Company
Model: Southern Cross
Category: Trail Saddles
Purchase: I bought this saddle from the Australian Stock Saddle Company's booth at the Midwest Horse Fair in Wisconsin in 2009. I traded in my Muster Master plus cash for this saddle.
Likes: These saddles are very comfortable and secure for the rider. The deep seat and poleys make for a secure ride.
Dislikes: The saddle fit for the horse is horrible. I am an endurance rider and horse comfort is very important to me. I noticed after I began riding in a consistent basis in the Southern Cross that my gelding would not stride out. I was told to get a better pad. Followed the ASSC's rep who recommended the CSI pads - read my review of that for more info. The CSI pad seemed to make the situation worse. My gelding developed HUGE white spots on both sides of his withers. These saddles are designed for a very narrow withered horse. I contacted the ASSC for help. They recommended that I bring my horse and saddle to one of their 'master' saddle fitters. I did so. Paid $50 for a saddle fitting and over $200 for the saddle to be custom fit to my gelding. Started riding him in his 'new' saddle - the white spots came back even larger! I have contacted the ASSC several times via phone and email with any response. Customer service seems to be non-existent with this company. I have my doubts as to whether anything was done when I sent my saddle in for fitting. I would also state that the stirrups are hung very far forward, which makes getting out of the saddle to post or 2 point, quite difficult.
Quality: Saddles seem to be pretty well made.
Summary: I would be very hesitant to purchase anything from the ASS company. If you happen to get lucky and get a good fit, good for you.
Usefulness Rating: 2.375 out of 5.
