Purchase: I met Danny at a trade show and he is a salesman like no other. I paid $5200 for the saddle and $350 for the girth.
Likes: Beautiful looking, quality leather - and a the owner of the company has enough passion about his unique saddles to fill a convention center.
Dislikes: Danny commands a premium price for his saddles - but the service DOES NOT MATCH. And when you buy a unique saddle design like this - you are pretty much tied to that company. Before I bought my first saddle I spoke to one of his references prior to making my saddle purchase who had recommended dozens of saddles to her students, plus I called and talked to a DK saddle owner in my state and thought that if the saddles worked well for her, it would work for me. NOT the case! After only 4 months since the $500 I paid for 2 saddle fittings - the one saddle was unusable and no longer fit my horse at all, and the other saddle was way off balance. And my options were to ship the saddles to the company (paying for shipping and waiting to have them returned before I could ride) or wait WEEKS for someone from his company to come to my state - block off a day to pick that person up from the airport- get my saddles fixed - then pay $250 per fitting - then shuttle the saddle fitter back to the airport. If you live in a location where there are not many DK saddles and he does not have a "route" - this could be one of the most expensive mistakes you'll make buying a saddle.
Quality: The DK saddles are beautiful - but it doesn't matter how pretty it looks if it rubs the hair off your horse's withers and makes him bleed after only 4 months since your last saddle fitting! Plus I spent $375 in body work and time off to help my horse recover from a week of repeated attempts on my own to fix the saddle. Plus - I made the mistake of buying a saddle without trying it on my 2nd horse before ordering it. I could sit one horse's trot just fine - but my other horse had to have his saddle aired up so much that once he got strong enough over his back for me to start sitting his trot, it was like I was bouncing on a trampoline!
Summary: Do not buy from a saddle company based on looks - based on other riders recommendations or experiences. TRY THE SADDLE FOR YOURSELF ON YOUR OWN HORSE and find out what the service model will be - how often he will come to your area - will you be notified in advance and what it costs for saddle fittings. You could be THRILLED for ages to have a beautiful unique saddle - but if your horse's back changes and it gets colder outside and the "air pressure" lowers on the saddle - then maybe you, too can't ride for weeks because you can't get someone from the company to come service it in any sense of urgency. For me -- what an expensive mistake DK was!
