Purchase: I was showing at the International Walking Horse Championship and saw a display at World Champion Horse Equipment. I was curious about it so I bought one for $25.00.
Likes: I put the hay ball in the stall of an intelligent show mare that gets bored easily. She has had a stall ball in with her prior to this. With the hay ball, she gets to eat and play at the same time. I have also noticed that there is far less hay wasted in the stall than with a traditional hay rack.
Since the original purchase, I have added three more (one for an older horse and two for young fillies). Age doesn't seem to matter, all of the horses spend a lot of time swinging it around to amuse themselves. The units are sturdy enough to withstand some serious punishment. The show mare was comfortable enough when she put her head completely through the ball that she wore it like a necklace until I got home from work to take it off.
Their portability is also a plus. You can fill a couple of them with hay, throw them in the back of a truck and take them to a horse show or an all day trail ride, hook it to the trailer and your horse will stay occupied and not get restless during down time.
I am sold on this product and am planning on adding six more of them to my barn (these will be for ages 6 months to 23 years).
Dislikes: The only problem I had with the hay ball is the rope it comes with is not long enough for my barn (converted tobacco barn). The tiers that they are fixed to are quite a bit above the stalls. The rope extension that they are put on, however, gives the younger more aggressive horses a lot more swing and therefore more possibility of breakage. This has not yet happened though.
Quality: It is a simple concept. Fifteen flexible PVC tubes with a poly(something) top and bottom that the tubes (after heating in hot water) slip onto easily.
Summary: This is a great product for horses of all ages and I recommend it highly.
