Purchase: I ordered this pad off of ebay for $70, a steal compared to sites that sold this pad for $130. I needed a pad that would let me adjust the thickness in areas where my horse's back/topline was changing due to age. I was also happy that it was made in the USA!
Likes: I like that it has a felt bottom and holes along the spine for air flow. The inserts pockets are closed with heavy duty velcro that seems pretty tough and durable. The round shock foam (neoprene) inserts are nice and will work well. The top is a 1000 denier nylon with synthetic leather wears. It that look like it will hold up really well over time. Nice looking pad overall. Also made in the USA...
Dislikes: The shock foam bars that come with the pad are a joke. The become paper thin when gently pressed between you finders, so I highly doubt there will be any "shock" absorption at all and will probably flatten themselves completely with just the weight of a light saddle.
Quality: Overall the quality of this pad is not what I expected. The shell and felt lining are paper thin, maybe the thickness of a saddle blanket. Without multiple sets of inserts there is no way to make this saddle pad "shock absorbing" enough to prevent your saddle from making you horses back sore!!! I am also wondering how long it will take for the leather (really feels like vinyl) on the contoured spine to rip or break. It is very thin and I can't see it holding up over time.
Summary: I am going to try and make my own inserts by cutting up an old neoprene pad I have and use those instead of the shock foam bar inserts that came with this pad. IF the contour spine holds up to everyday use, this may be an ok pad if you are wanting to customize the bar area to fit your horses needs and just need a shell to fill... however if you are not wanting to put even more $$ into it I would run the other way! There is no way this pad would protect a horses back with even the perfect fitting saddle!
